Background:
Native of Gaspar Hernández, Dominican Republic, Lic. Nieves Sosa graduated from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the First University of America, with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1989. She furthered her education with a Master’s degree in Family Therapy.
Professional Career:
Lic. Sosa began her distinguished career at ‘Hogar Crea’ in San Cristóbal, a renowned addiction recovery center, where she was among the first psychologists to provide services. She also held the position of Head of the Evaluations Department at The National Lottery, where her work in promoting student internships was recognized by Dr. Mayra Brea of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.
After moving to the United States in 2004, she settled in Philadelphia and worked in various mental health care clinics, earning accolades for her dedication to patients with mental health disorders. Her contributions extend across different organizations, including the Hispanic Health Professionals Association, Inc. NY (AHPSI) and the Dominican Medical College, Philadelphia branch.
Academic Contributions:
Lic. Sosa has been a significant figure in academia, teaching in the Master’s program in Family Therapy at UASD and later at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) in New York City. At UNPHU, she taught four subjects in the Master’s program in Clinical Psychology.
Community Involvement:
Currently, Lic. Sosa volunteers at a local church in Philadelphia, offering lectures, workshops, and guidance to parishioners, demonstrating her commitment to community service.
Recognition:
Lic. Sosa was honored by the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo for her contributions to the development of the psychology degree, showcasing her lifelong dedication to education and professional development.
Award Ceremony:
Lic. Nieves Sosa will be honored with the «Lifetime of Excellence and Dedication Award» by the Hispanic Health Professionals Association, Inc. NY (AHPSI) on May 5, 2024, at the Cherkasky Auditorium at Montefiore Hospital, as part of the AHPSI XVIII Annual International Medical Congress.
