La demencia es un problema de salud global de gran magnitud. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), en 2020 había alrededor de 55 millones de personas que vivían con demencia en todo el mundo. Se estima que para 2030 este número podría aumentar a 78 millones y para 2050 podría llegar a 139 millones de personas con demencia.
La demencia tiene un impacto devastador no solo en los pacientes sino también en sus familias y cuidadores. Además, representa una carga económica significativa para los sistemas de salud y las sociedades. En 2019, el costo global de la demencia fue estimado en 1,3 billones de dólares.
